ATHENS, Ga., April 1 (UPI) -- The U.S. Defense Department has contracted ArunA Biomedical Inc. to continue development of a biosensor technology to support field combat operations.

U.S. company and human embryonic stem cell-derived products developer ArunA was awarded the contract to continue work on a biosensor prototype originally developed by the Naval Research Laboratory.

As part of the Defense Department award, ArunA will develop the biosensor system with its stem cell technologies to support national security and field combat testing of environmental toxins.

"Effective monitoring and regulation of environmental contamination remains a major challenge of great importance for both military and civilian populations," David Ray, ArunA chief executive, said in a statement.

"ArunA is pleased to have an opportunity to further develop a technology that could aid national security and field combat."
