MERRIMACK, N.H., March 31 (UPI) -- The U.S. Air Force has contracted BAE Systems to develop radar-receiver technology to support the protection of critical satellites.
British company BAE was awarded was awarded the development contract to support the Air Force's Satellite Awareness and Protection program. Under the three-year, $6.3 million contract, BAE will develop a radar-warning-receiver prototype to "identify radio-frequency and communications activity in real time," according to a news release.
The Satellite Awareness and Protection program is part of an effort develop a system to warn security authorities of a potential attack on mission-critical and commercial satellites.
"Satellites are integral to worldwide banking, communications, television, navigation, weather forecasting and remote-sensing capabilities," Eric Rhodes, BAE Systems business development manager, said in a statement.
"The (United States) relies on satellites for national security, our economy and science programs, and this technology will help our nation keep these capabilities secure."
