MARIETTA, Ga., March 2 (UPI) -- The U.S. Air Force has received the third C-5M Super Galaxy from Lockheed Martin as part of a program to modernize the heavy-airlift military aircraft.
U.S. company Lockheed Martin announced the C-5M was delivered to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, marking the final aircraft delivery during the system design and development phase of the C-5 modernization program.
Lockheed Martin is under contract to deliver 52 modernized C-5Ms by 2016. Officials said the full modernization of the C-5s, which have been in service for the Air Force since the 1970s, is an effort to improve the performance of the aircraft, along with other upgrades.
"This delivery is yet another success in the C-5 modernization program," Lorraine Martin, Lockheed Martin C-5 program vice president, said in a statement.
"I'm confident the Air Force will be as impressed with the improved performance, reliability and capability of the Super Galaxy as we were during flight test."
