GD to supply ammunition-handling systems

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Feb. 24 (UPI) -- General Dynamics has been contracted to provide ammunition-handling systems for Turkish and Moroccan F-16 fighter aircraft.

U.S. company General Dynamics said its Armament and Technical Products business unit was awarded the contract from Lockheed Martin.

Under the $39 million deal, General Dynamics will manufacturer and deliver F-16 ammunition-handling systems as part of a deal to support the Turkish and Moroccan fleet of F-16 fighter jets.

Officials say the ammunition-handling technology is designed to strengthen the safety of the aircraft from ammunition casings and provide a greater capacity of ammunition.

"Combined with the M61A1 20mm Gatling gun, the Ammunition Handling System provides the F-16 aircraft with maximum air-to-air and air-to-surface lethality," Steve Vander Kraats, General Dynamics program manager, said in a statement.

"Our team is excited about this opportunity, and we look forward to supporting Lockheed Martin and our allies with the continued success of the F-16 platform."
