Army contracts for artillery accuracy tech

EDGEWOOD, Md., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has contracted Smiths Detection for upper atmospheric measuring technologies to support long-range artillery target accuracy.

U.S. company Smiths Detection was awarded the Army deal to deliver its Measuring Set-Profiler systems.

The MMS-P system, integrated into specially equipped Humvees, is designed to provide the Army with real-time upper atmospheric data to improve longer-range field artillery accuracy through the incorporation of satellites, ground sensors and weather balloon data.

"We are delighted with this strong validation of our participation in the MMS-P Program," Mal Maginnis, Smiths Detection Global Military and Emergency Responders president, said in a statement.

"The U.S. Army continues to deploy the most advanced technologies available, and the MMS-P provides critical data for accuracy in certain military operations."
