SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- A Lockheed Martin-Northrop Grumman development team announced a milestone achievement in network-centric operations for the U.S. military.

U.S. companies Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman teamed up to develop new capabilities for the U.S. Air Force's Transformational Satellite Communications System constellation.

Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman officials announced they have matured the SpaceWire technology for the TSAT constellation that upgrades data transfer capabilities for network-centric operations supporting military units in the battlefield.

The SpaceWire data bus technology provides "on-orbit satellite internal communications for box-to-box and system-to-system data transfer" that Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman officials say is now ready for preliminary design review.

"SpaceWire is the ideal solution for TSAT," Mark Pasquale, Lockheed Martin TSAT vice president, said in a statement.

"It can transfer electronic data at least 80 times faster than current data bus technology and introduces a highly reliable and robust distributed architecture routing system."
