EWING, N.J., Jan. 15 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has extended a phase III contract with Universal Display Corp. to continue development of its wrist-mounted flexible display technologies.
New Jersey-based Universal Display was awarded a small-business innovation research phase III contract extension from Army Communication Electronics Research and Development Engineering Center worth $1 million.
As part of the 15-month extension, Universal Display will continue to develop its UniversalPHOLED, or Universal Phosphorescent Organic Light Emitting Diode, technology. The wrist-mounted system is a flexible OLED display being designed to offer soldiers advanced communications capabilities including real-time video and graphics information in the field.
"Having made great strides in the development of flexible OLED display technology, we are pleased to continue our work to demonstrate the readiness of this technology for military and commercial applications," Steven Abramson, Universal Display president and chief executive officer, said in a statement.
The "flexible OLED technology is well-positioned for insertion into both military and consumer product opportunities, such as this wrist-mounted communications device."
