KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- The U.S. Air Force has contracted a Lockheed Martin-led team to support situational awareness capabilities to protect U.S. space operations.

The Air Force awarded U.S. company Lockheed Martin's team, which includes Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems, a two-year $20 million contact. Under the deal, the Lockheed Martin team will support the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center's Space Situation Awareness program.

Officials say Lockheed Martin will develop network-centric solutions and deliver a prototype to protect U.S. space assets with greater situational awareness.

"The team is proud to support the delivery of operational prototype capability to the Joint Space Operations Center to address critical needs," Don Speranzini, Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services Mission & Combat Support Solutions director of operationally responsive command and control, said in a statement.

"Exposing existing relevant data and intuitively providing information to users will assist the Air Force in delivering integrated services to address the challenging Space Situation Awareness mission."
