TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- The U.S. Transportation Security Administration has contracted Rapiscan Systems for the company's high-speed threat detection baggage screening technologies.

California-based Rapiscan was awarded an approximately $6 million deal to deliver its Real Time Tomography baggage screening system to the TSA.

Officials say the Rapiscan RTT system, expected to be deployed at U.S. airports, offers TSA security authorities a screening system that generates high-resolution three-dimensional X-ray images at high speeds.

"We believe the RTT system is a major advance over the Computed Tomography-based baggage screening technologies that are currently deployed in U.S. airports and elsewhere," Ajay Mehra, Rapiscan Systems president, said in a statement.

"Our stationary gantry design allows RTT to achieve speed and resolution that is unprecedented in legacy Computed Tomography designs."
