The contract extension, from the Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command, is part of the U.S. Defense Department's effort to offer soldiers more protection from hostile threats in combat zones.

"Our customer has again chosen the armored security vehicles to protect soldiers," Tom Walmsley, Textron Marine & Land Systems general manager, said in a statement.

"Our partnership with TACOM has allowed these vehicles to be delivered with the latest fragmentation protection kits, improving the system survivability even more."

Once manufactured, Texton's armored security vehicles will be shipped to DRS Technologies for installation of sensor and mission equipment packages.
