PINE BROOK, N.J., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Germany-based Lufthansa Cargo has contracted Smiths Detection for the company's explosives detection technologies.

Lufthansa Cargo, the cargo airline subsidiary of Lufthansa passenger airline, contracted Smiths Detection for 19 of its Ionscan 500DT dual trace explosives detectors.

Lufthansa will install the Ionscan 500DT technologies at all of its U.S. airport locations as part of an effort to meet new Transportation Security Administration requirements. With the announced contract, Lufthansa becomes the first airline to meet the recently established TSA's ground-to-air cargo screening rules.

"Our investment in research and development continues to drive technology developments in a broad range of screening solutions, and this contract underlines how these advances are helping our customers implement the 100 percent cargo screening increasingly sought by authorities," Stephen Phipson, Smiths Detection group managing director, said in a statement.
