USS Bunker Hill gets new Aegis upgrade

MOORESTOWN, N.J., Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin announced the completed installation of its new Aegis Open Architecture Weapon System aboard the U.S. Navy's USS Bunker Hill.

As part of an ongoing fleet modernization, the Navy's guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill has been fully upgraded with Lockheed Martin's new open architecture technologies.

Officials say the Aegis Open Architecture Weapon System, developed with open system software technologies and commercial off-the-shelf computing hardware, is part of an effort to more easily refresh the weapons systems capabilities as the technology becomes available.

"Aegis modernization extends the sea-going horizon for the Navy's Ticonderoga-class cruisers," Orlando Carvalho, Martin's Surface-Sea Based Missile Defense Systems vice president and general manager, said in a statement.

"As Aegis was when it first went to sea, Aegis remains the most capable multi-mission naval weapon system in the world. Open architecture will allow the Aegis program to continue evolving the world's most capable integrated air and missile defense system to remain a step ahead of any threat."
