PINE BROOK, N.J., June 25 (UPI) -- Smiths Detection, part of British company Smiths Group, announced the launch Tuesday of a new hand-held home-made bomb detector.
Smiths Detection says its new Sabre EXV is capable of detecting vapors, through ion mobility spectrometry technology, released by chemicals commonly used in the making of improvised explosive devices and other home-made bombs.
Officials say the Sabre's IMS technology is capable of detecting any vapors present in as little as 10 seconds.
"The Sabre EXV will fill a gap in detecting improvised explosive devices for the military and airline industries in particular," Stephen Phipson, Smiths Detection Group managing director, said in a statement.
"Its development demonstrates Smiths Detection's commitment both to partnering with our customers and to research and development on products that fill an immediate, critical need."
