Marine Corps modifies BAE MRAP deal

YORK, Pa., June 17 (UPI) -- The U.S. Marine Corps has modified its contract with BAE Systems for additional Special Operations Command mine resistant ambush protected vehicles.

The Marine Corps modified the contract with BAE for 40 additional SOCOM armored utility variant MRAP vehicles worth $53 million. The armored utility variant, based on BAE's RG33 6x6 family of vehicles, is an MRAP variation offering tailored operational capabilities while addressing the need for additional armor protection in combat zones like Iraq and Afghanistan.

BAE officials say the armored utility variant offers Marine Corps units the towing capacity of up to 30,000 pounds.

"Our MRAP variants are tailored to meet mission-specific requirements for our Marines, soldiers and Special Forces," Matt Riddle, BAE Systems wheeled vehicle programs vice president, said in a statement.

"These highly survivable vehicles will allow servicemen and -women to safely and efficiently carry out their duties."
