LONDON, Ontario, June 13 (UPI) -- General Dynamics Land Systems has received a contract modification from the U.S. Army adding to the number of RG-31 Mk5E Mine Protected Vehicles on order.
General Dynamics Land Systems, a Canada-based business unit of U.S. defense contractor General Dynamics, received the $67.3 million contract modification from the Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, Life Cycle Management Command.
The announced deal modifies the two previous contracts for RG-31 Mk5E armored vehicles and adds another 111, bringing the total mine protected vehicle ordered from General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada to 566.
The RG-31 Mk5E armored vehicle design is similar to the vehicle ordered by the U.S. Marine Corps for the mine resistant ambush protected vehicle program and is designed to address the evolving threat from improvised explosive devices and other militant threats in combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Officials say the RG-31 Mk5E vehicles will begin being delivered in August.
