BEDFORD, Mass., May 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation has placed orders for iRobot's xBot robotic technologies.

PEO STRI ordered 200 robots along with spare parts for $16 million from iRobot. The announcement is the third order for xBot robots, which includes the company's PackBot technologies under a $286 million Indefinite-Delivery/Indefinite-Quantity contract with iRobot.

Additionally iRobot received an order from PEO STRI for $6.3 million for their PackBot 510 with explosive ordnance disposal kits and their PackBot with ICx Fido explosives detection kits. The order is under a $64 million IDIQ contract.

"Each day, the military is using our robots to perform missions that leverage the benefits of robots in theater," Joe Dyer, iRobot government and industrial robots president, said in a statement. "Continued investment by the U.S. Army further validates these advantages, especially the ability to complete critical missions at safe standoff distances."

The U.S. military has increased its deployment of iRobot's technologies in an effort to keep soldiers out of harm's way when working to identify improvised explosive devises and other threats in conflict zones in Iraq and Afghanistan.
