PHOENIX, May 15 (UPI) -- The U.S. Defense Logistics Agency has ordered 45,000 additional advanced combat helmets under a contract with BAE Systems.
The $9.7 million DLA follow-on contract is part of a multiyear deal with BAE that has a ceiling value of $1.2 billion. Officials say the advanced combat helmet adds a layer of protection for a soldier's head against ballistic threats while operating in conflict zones like Iraq and Afghanistan.
"The award will provide a state-of-the-art helmet system for our joint armed forces," Sean Martin, BAE Systems business development of individual equipment director, said in a statement. "The helmet provides vital ballistic protection, and also a platform for the integration of technologies critical to the warfighter's situational awareness."
The announced contract for BAE's advanced combat helmets brings the total value of orders to $88.9 million.
