PINE BROOK, N.J., May 1 (UPI) -- Security officials at the Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport say they have deployed a new streamlined baggage screening technology.
The new iLane screening technology from New Jersey-based Smiths Detection pairs with the company's aTiX threat identification X-ray baggage screening system by adding an additional baggage pathway. Officials say a two baggage lane screening system offers U.S. Transportation Security Administration personnel a way to divert a bag to a separate area without halting the flow of other carry-on luggage.
The deployment at BWI's new terminal B checkpoint marks the first installation of the new iLane technology for Smiths Detection.
"We have achieved a winning combination," Stephen Phipson, Smiths Detection group managing director, said in a statement. "The iLane system coupled with aTiX has the potential to greatly improve security checkpoint throughput in airports, while adding the advanced threat detection of multi-view X-ray."
