PINE BROOK, N.J., April 29 (UPI) -- Smiths Detection says it has installed eight of its Advanced Threat Identification X-ray screening devices at Albuquerque's international airport.

The installation of the aTiX X-ray technology at Albuquerque International Sunport marks its first deployment at a screening checkpoint in the United States. Smiths Detection worked closely with the U.S. Transportation Security Administration on the aTiX system. Officials say the aTiX technology is capable of capturing multiple views of carry-on bags in a single sweep.

"aTiX is a giant step forward in checkpoint screening, increasing the ability to detect potential threats," Stephen Phipson, Smiths Detection group managing director, said in a statement. "With its multiple views generating clear images, it provides a revolutionary advance in threat detection and is already widely used in the United Kingdom. It represents a strategic growth opportunity for Smiths Detection both in the United States and the rest of the world."

Company officials say the aTiX system's software can be easily upgraded as potential threats from passenger carry-on baggage evolve.
