Magnolia awarded DARPA funding

WOBURN, Mass., April 24 (UPI) -- Magnolia Optical Technologies has received funding from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to further develop threat detection technologies.

Massachusetts based-Magnolia was awarded the additional $500,000 for the development of its ZnO nanowire threat detection technologies for use by the military. The funding is part of DARPA's small-business innovation research program and was awarded by the U.S. Army in Huntsville, Ala.

The DARPA funding brings Magnolia's contact with the Army to $1.25 million for its ZnO nanowire based devices. Magnolia, an ultraviolet, visible and infrared spectrum technologies developer for military sensors, says its ZnO nanowire is being developed to detect potential snipers among other threats.

"We are pleased to receive the development program and look forward to working with DARPA and the U.S. Army sponsors," Ashok Sood, Magnolia president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. "This award is important to Magnolia for developing this innovative technology for defense and commercial applications."
