EWING, N.J., April 24 (UPI) -- Universal Display Corp. has delivered a prototype of a new organic light-emitting diode screen with night and daytime capabilities to the U.S. Army.

Universal Display, based in New Jersey, says it has developed the world's first flexible OLED display capable of daytime operation with visible green emission and dark environment operation with infrared emission. The company delivered its new technology to the Army to offer soldiers in the field the ability to view the display in both light and dark modes.

The new display, using Universal Display's trademarked PHOLED (phosphorescent OLED) technology, was developed through a Small Business Innovation Research program with the U.S. Army. Officials say the prototype is an effort to enhance the display efficiency in daytime operation and offer covert capabilities when switched to operate in an IR-emission mode in the dark.

"The design and delivery of this display prototype marks another milestone for our high-efficiency, phosphorescent OLED technology and our work with the U.S. government," Steven Abramson, Universal Display president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. "The prototype provides further evidence of the benefits that our PHOLED technology can provide in a variety of environments and applications for the military and commercial sectors."
