COSTA MESA, Calif., April 1 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army's Maryland-based Aberdeen Proving Ground announced it has contracted anti-ballistics armor developer Ceradyne Inc. to provide ceramic body armor.

Under the $41.1 million Army deal, California-based Ceradyne will provide the Aberdeen Proving Ground with enhanced side ballistic inserts. The order adds to Ceradyne's recent contracts with the U.S. military. In March the U.S. Special Operations Command contracted Ceradyne to supply ballistic plates for body armor load carriage systems.

Ceradyne, a developer of advanced technical ceramic products and components for defense and industrial industries among other markets, says it expects to deliver the announced side ballistic inserts before September 2008.

"We are pleased with this recent side plate delivery order which continues to provide future shipment visibility," David Reed, Ceradyne president of North American operations, said in a statement. "Based on non-binding discussions with the Army, we believe there will be further delivery orders in the second quarter."
