PINE BROOK, N.J., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- New Jersey-based Smiths Detection announced it has been contracted by a U.S. government agency for its X-ray cargo-screening technologies.

Smiths Detection is a subsidiary of Smiths Group and is a developer of detection technologies identifying explosives, chemical and biological agents and weapons among other threats for the homeland security and defense markets. The company announced it has received three contracts worth $58.3 million from an undisclosed U.S. government agency for three cargo-screening X-ray configurations.

"This contract is a strong validation of our high-energy X-ray products suite," Stephen Phipson, Smiths Detection group managing director, said in a statement. "These state-of-the-art detection systems will be used to secure ports by rapidly assisting in the identification of potentially life threatening or illegal shipments. We look forward to delivering security solutions that will help make the world safer."

Officials say Smiths Detection will supply its HCV Mobile and HCV Gantry for use at inbound and outbound shipping containers and trucks scanning facilities. Smiths Detection will also supply its HCV Pass-Through configuration.

"This suite of security products, the HCV Mobile, fixed Gantry and high-throughput Pass-Through system add a flexible layer of security in our nation's fight to protect our ports and borders against terrorism," said Cherif Rizkalla, Smiths Detection Americas president.
