Army contracts Kopin for new displays

TAUNTON, Mass., Nov. 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army announced it has contracted Massachusetts-based Kopin Corp. for its CyberDisplay 640M LVR for use in the Army’s new thermal weapon sight program.

Kopin is a manufacturer of micro-displays for mobile consumer and military applications. The U.S. Army announced the adoption of the company's CyberDisplay 640M LVR monochrome display, capable of operating at extremely low temperatures with the ability to instantly turn on without additional heating sources. Officials say the Army will use the display in its TWS Bridge program, a thermal weapon sight program.

The order has the potential of exceeding 150,000 units.

“This latest award represents a solid endorsement of Kopin’s technology as the microdisplay of choice for the U.S. military,” Kopin President and Chief Executive Officer John C.C. Fan said in a statement.

“Our design team was inspired by a challenge from our major Department of Defense equipment suppliers to develop a display system capable of operating at extremely low temperatures with unsurpassed power efficiency. Our innovative display solution not only meets the needs of the TWS Bridge product, but will likely be adopted across a broad range of Department of Defense applications.”

The CyberDisplay 640M LVR monochrome display combines two of Kopin’s patent-pending inventions -- its low-voltage architecture and its Vcom Thin Film technology.
