GDLS wins new Marine MRAP contract

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich., Oct. 24 (UPI) -- General Dynamics Land Systems has won an order to make 401 MRAPS for the U.S. Marine Corps.

"General Dynamics Land Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics, has received a $188.8 million work order from Force Protection Inc. to produce 401 vehicles for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Mine Resistant Ambush Protected -- MRAP -- vehicle program," the company said in a statement Monday.

"Force Protection and General Dynamics have a partnership to share in the production and program management of the MRAP contact," the company said.

"Force Protection was previously awarded a $376.6 million contract to produce 800 vehicles for the MRAP program. The latest MRAP delivery order purchases Force Protection’s category I 4X4 and category II 6X6 Cougar vehicles. Fabrication and assembly will be performed in Anniston and Oxford, Alabama; Charlotte, Michigan; Ladson, South Carolina; Lima, Ohio; Kings Point, North Carolina; and Sealy, Texas," General Dynamics said.

General Dynamics said Force Protection "manufactures ballistic- and mine-protected vehicles through its wholly owned subsidiary. These specialty vehicles are protected against landmines, hostile fire, and Improvised Explosive Devices -- IEDs, commonly referred to as roadside bombs. Force Protection's mine and ballistic protection technology is among the most advanced in the world. The vehicles are manufactured outside Charleston, S.C."

General Dynamics is based in Falls Church, Va., and has a global staff of around 82,600. The company said it projects 2007 revenues of more than $27 billion.

General Dynamics described itself as "a market leader in business aviation; land and expeditionary combat systems, armaments and munitions; shipbuilding and marine systems; and information systems and technologies."
