PHOENIX, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Arizona-based DPAir has released a list of tips for companies to better protect their data centers.

DPAir is a data center design, installation and maintenance service provider. As part of U.S. Department of Homeland Security's designation of September as National Preparedness Month, the company is offering tips to companies wanting to take a proactive approach in protecting their intellectual data.

"By proactively evaluating the security of your company data center now before a disaster hits, a company can save millions in lost data and business," said Arnie Evdokimo, president of DPAir, in a statement. "With a few simple additions, a firm can protect their data centers from the devastating effects of disasters, including earthquakes, fires, hurricanes and floods."

DHS designated National Preparedness Month to promote the development of disaster preparedness plan for citizens and businesses across the country in the event of a natural terrorist disaster. Officials estimate as much $52 billion per year in damages are caused due to disasters.

At the top of DPAir's list Evdokimo advises that the location of a data center should not be in a high-risk seismic zone, in a flood plain, or close to a railroad or airport among disaster-prone areas. Additionally, the safest location for critical data storage is in the core of the building.

Evdokimo also recommends installing a backup generator, updating fire suppression systems and installing an HVAC system to maintain appropriate temperature conditions.
