EAST HARTFORD, Conn., Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The U.S. Air Force has awarded Pratt & Whitney a $1.05 billion contract for its F117 military transport engines.

The company is expected to deliver the engines through 2012 for the Air Force's C-17 aircraft program. The C-17 Globemaster III is powered by Pratt & Whitney's F117 engines.

"We are pleased that the U.S. Air Force continues to have confidence in the dependability of the Pratt & Whitney F117 engine and its ability to meet its mission needs around the world," Warren Boley, vice president, Pratt & Whitney operational military engines programs, said in a statement.

The F117 has consistently proven itself as a reliable engine. It comes from the company's PW2000 commercial engine that powers the Boeing 757. Company officials say the F117 surpasses goals for time on wing, in-flight shut downs and support turnaround time because of ongoing investment for improvements.

Pratt & Whitney military engines also include the F100, powering the F-16 and F-15; the F135, powering the F-35 Lightning II; the F119 for the F-22 Raptor; and the F117 for the C-17 Globemaster III.
