Koreas to have high-level military talks

SEOUL, July 16 (UPI) -- Military officials from North and South Korea plan to meet next week to discuss tension reduction measures across their heavily armed border.

The two Koreas have agreed to meet July 24-26 at the truce village of Panmunjom, Seoul's defense officials said Monday. The agreement was reached at a working-level contacts earlier that day, they said.

High on the agenda will include establishing a joint fishing area off the western coast to prevent naval clashes on their sea border, and making a security guarantee for the safe passage of trains on the railways crossing the Demilitarized Zone, the officials said.

The poorly marked western sea border, called Northern Limit Line, has long been a constant source of armed conflicts between the two Koreas. The U.N.-imposed line has served as an inter-Korean sea border since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

The North has called for redrawing of inter-Korean maritime border and warned of "whole-scale war" if its demand was not met.
