WASHINGTON, June 12 (UPI) -- A prominent congressional Republican has praised the service of the outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs, U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates has refused to reappoint Pace for a second term as chairman and is replacing him with his former deputy, Adm. Michael Mullen.
However, Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., the senior Republican on the Armed Services Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives and a conservative candidate for the GOP's 2008 presidential nomination, issued a statement Monday praising Pace's tenure.
"Gen. Peter Pace is a great American hero. He has commanded troops with distinction at virtually every level of the military in combat and times of peace," Hunter said. "Gen. Pace's decorations are too numerous to list in their entirety, but they include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star Medal with Combat 'V.' His lifelong dedication to the men and women of the Marine Corps, and their families, will be remembered and applauded for generations.
"As the first Marine general to be appointed as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he showed the same commitment and dedication to the men and women of the Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as the civilians under his command," Hunter said. " ... As the former chairman and now ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, I have always found Gen. Pace's first and foremost concern to be the welfare of the men and women in the military."
Gates refusal to reappoint Pace has been widely seen as a lack of confidence in the leadership provided by Pace and others handpicked by former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
