BEIJING, May 14 (UPI) -- China has strengthened its role as a supporter of African nations by launching a communications satellite for Nigeria.
The bid for the $311 million contract was made in 2004, when China won over 21 rivals to secure the deal to launch NIGCOMSAT-1. The satellite will provide broadcasting as well as phone and other communication services including mobile and Internet connections not just for Nigeria, but across Africa.
By launching the satellite into orbit Monday, China wants to "cooperate with developing countries in the peaceful use of outer space and to promote a closer relationship between China and African nations," according to Chinese news agency Xinhua.
In 2003, Nigeria launched a weather satellite in conjunction with Russia.
