RAMALLAH, West Bank, March 23 (UPI) -- Israel released the son of a Fatah leader who had spent three years in prison and have put him under house arrest in the West Bank.
Palestinian legal sources said Friday that Qassam Barghouti, son of Marwan Barghouti, was released after an Israeli military tribunal acquitted him March 15 on charges of involvement in attempts to kill Israeli civilians and troops.
The young Barghouti was arrested in December 2003 as he was returning to the West Bank from Egypt, where he was a student at the American University in Cairo. He was initially sentenced to 15 months in prison, but the Israeli military prosecution added more charges against him and kept him longer in jail.
His father, Marwan, is serving several life terms on charges of involvement in attacks that have targeted Israelis. Both father and son have maintained their innocence.
