SEOUL, March 21 (UPI) -- Tens of thousands of South Korean medical doctors went on strike Wednesday to protest the government's plan to revise medical law.
About 50,000 physicians throughout the country closed their clinics to join a protest rally held in front of a government complex south of Seoul, according to the Korea Medical Association.
Striking doctors are opposing a plan by the Ministry of Health and Welfare to amend the country's medical law, which calls for the introduction of a "freelance" doctor system, among other things.
"The revisions will severely threaten public health, infringe on the rights of doctors and cause massive increases in medical expenses," said Chang Dong-ik, president of the KMA. "If the government refuses to scrap the bill, we will return our licenses to the government and escalate the protest."
