ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, March 12 (UPI) -- Pakistani spies and U.S. agents have arrested two suspected terrorists from Germany in Pakistan, according to a news report Monday.

The men, identified by German news magazine Der Spiegel only as 30-year-old German Michael N., and Nihad C., a Bosnian national who had lived in southwestern Germany, were arrested just a few days after they had entered into Pakistan from Afghanistan.

Experts say the mountainous Afghan-Pakistani border area of Waziristan is a pooling retreat for Islamist terrorists from all over the region. Der Spiegel reported that officials from Pakistani intelligence circles believe more than 2,000 Islamists are hiding there.

The case could turn into a diplomatic problem for Berlin if Pakistan hands over the prisoners to U.S. authorities. Last Thursday, German diplomats asked the Pakistani ambassador to Germany for consular access to Michael N., the news magazine said.

The allegations against the pair are substantial: Pakistani authorities believe the men have had contacts with Islamists and visited an al-Qaida camp near the Afghan-Pakistani border.

Nihad C. had already moved in the gridlock of Germany's anti-terror prosecutors when his name surfaced with a southwestern German Islamic group that is believed to actively support terrorist organizations.
