MANILA, Philippines, March 12 (UPI) -- Japan will give Mongolia $1.5 million to help the urban poor prioritize what it is they need to improve their lives.
The grant, which will be administered by the Manila-based Asian Development Bank, will "provide the community not just with funds but also technical support and guidance," said Amy Leung, an urban development specialist at the ADB.
The bank pointed out that about 80 percent of poor people in Mongolia live in temporary settlements know as ger, where there is poor sanitation and polluted air from excess use of coal stoves.
The money from the Japanese government will be used to help 23,749 households in the Bayanhogor, Choyr, and Erdenet areas to identify 165 business opportunities to increase their livelihoods.
"The grant aims to engage these communities as active citizens, not passive beneficiaries," the ADB said.
