Sudan court to try Darfur suspects

KHARTOUM, Sudan, March 6 (UPI) -- A Sudanese official wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court will go to trial in a Sudanese criminal court Wednesday.

A Justice Ministry spokesman stated Tuesday that Ali Kushayb, whom the ICC described as a pro-government Janjaweed militia leader responsible for crimes against humanity in Darfur, will be tried along with two other security officials. The two other men were identified as police officials Hamdi Sharafeddine and Abdul Rahman Daoud Hamida.

They will be tried in the criminal court in el-Geneina, the capital of West Darfur in western Sudan, the unidentified spokesman said.

Last week, the ICC requested the summoning of Kushayb and government minister Ahmad Harun to be tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity in war-torn Darfur. President Omar al-Bashir said Sudan will not hand the men over for trial outside the country.
