TEL AVIV, Israel, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Israel's tourism minister candidate bowed out Wednesday after a wave of criticism over her false claims to academic degrees.

Esterina Tartman's party, Israel Beitenu, had nominated her for a Cabinet position and the ministers endorsed her candidacy Sunday.

Tuesday it transpired that her curriculum vitae, which said she had a bachelor's degree from Bar Ilan University, was wrong. Nor did she have a master's degree as she had claimed.

In a statement on prime time TV, Tartman lashed out at the media accusing reporters of character assassination. She said she did study at Bar Ilan University and got good marks but her BA was from another college.

She acknowledged that her claims to a master's degree were wrong but suggested that was a minor issue because she had studied for an MA. She took no questions and the minute she ended her presentation, party leader Avigdor Liberman told reporters to leave.

Tartman's appointment required Knesset approval and there was no guarantee that coalition Knesset members would indeed vote for her when the matter comes before the plenum.

Liberman's new candidate is Knesset Member Yitzhak Aharonovitch. He had been deputy police commissioner from 2002 to 2004
