Government backs demo restrictions

TEL AVIV, Israel, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- The Israeli government has decided to back proposed legislation to restrict demonstrations outside the homes of public officials.

Ha'artez said the proposed law, first submitted to the Knesset (parliament) about six months ago, would cover the homes of political leaders, members of the security forces, and senior civil servants, as well as judges and foreign diplomats.

The residences of close relatives of officials would also be off limits to protestors.

"The bill is designed to prevent the application of pressure and terror against public figures through disturbing their private lives and those of their family," the newspaper quoted officials.

The government's Ministeriaql Committee on Legislation reached their decision on Monday.

Demonstrations would still be allowed outside the offices of public officials as well as outside their official residences.

Any protests in the vicinity of private homes could not be staged coser than 500 yards.
