Northrop helps link U.S. biometrics system

WASHINGTON, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Northrop Grumman received a $75 million contract for a system that will integrate U.S. defense and federal government biometric identification systems.

The contract issued by the General Services Administration and the U.S. Army will enable the military to have faster access to the automated system that will assist them in determining if a suspect they have detained should be released or locked up.

"This biometrics system will be the Department of Defense's biometric repository for all identification types, linking to the intelligence community and civilian agencies, all in a focused effort to address the war on terrorism," Northrop Vice President Jill Kale said in a news release issued by the company Monday.

Northrop's role in the project will be to develop an interface software solution that will link the Pentagon to existing and planned repositories for biometric identification data, including fingerprints, palm prints and eye scans. The company will also be involved in engineering support for enhancement of the search-and-retrieval component.

About 50 new jobs will be created with the bulk of the work to take place in West Virginia, but some of it will be carried out in Iraq.
