Teen solves centuries-old math problem
GROTON, Conn., Dec. 28 (UPI) -- General Dynamics' Electric Boat subsidiary received major submarine contracts this week.
The cotnracts were for the dry-docking of one U.S. submarine and pre-construction of two others.
The Connecticut company received a $1.2 billion contract modification for the Virginia-class sub SSN 782 and advanced procurement of materials for the SSN 783, which will be on the books for FY 2008.
Neither of the boats has been named, although the class carries the names of U.S. states.
The modification will fund work to be carried out at Groton, Newport News and other locations around the United States. The Defense Department said in a news release the projects will be completed in 2014.
The Virginia class attack subs are just now starting to make its way into the U.S. fleet. The USS Hawaii, the third sub in the class, was delivered to the Navy earlier this month.
Electric Boat also received a contract worth nearly $50 million Thursday for the docking Selective Restricted Availability of the USS Albany later this year.
The Los Angeles-class Albany was commissioned in 1990 and will undergo work at its home port of Norfolk. The Pentagon said the job would be completed in May 2007.
