NORFOLK NAVAL STATION, Va., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. amphibious assault ship Saipan is returning from missions in the Persian Gulf to be decommissioned, the Navy Times reported Wednesday
The 29-year-old vessel is scheduled to return to its home port of Norfolk, Va. on Friday, the newspaper said, citing an announcement from the U.S. Navy's 2nd Fleet.
The Saipan carries Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 26 and has a crew of almost 1,000 sailors. It began its last tour of duty on Aug. 15 and operated for four months as Expeditionary Action Group 3, "conducting maritime security operations in both the Mediterranean and Middle East areas," the Navy Times said.
"In tandem with MH-53 helicopters of the Bahrain-based Mine Countermeasures Squadron 15, Saipan conducted two demonstrations of minesweeping capabilities in the Persian Gulf in September and November," the report said.
"Saipan also used the long-endurance ScanEagle Unmanned Aerial Vehicle system to conduct more than 400 hours of surveillance work, completing more than 50 intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions," the Navy Times said.
