WASHINGTON, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- A senior House Democrat wants U.S. President Bush to explain a White House decision to require redactions in a critical op-ed on Iran written by former staffers.

Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., the incoming chairwoman of the powerful Committee on Rules of the U.S. House of Representatives, released Wednesday a letter she sent to the president about the op-ed, drafted for the New York Times by Flynt Leverett and Hilary Mann, who worked at the White House's National Security Council in 2002 and 2003.

Slaughter stated that she would "appreciate an explanation behind your Administration's decision to redact substantial passages from Mr. Leverett's op-ed, even though reportedly the CIA had already cleared the information" contained in it for publication.

Leverett told United Press International that an earlier piece of writing, an academic paper published earlier this month, contained "identical language" to the redacted passages from his op-ed, and had been cleared by the CIA's Publication Review Board.

Slaughter wrote she was concerned the administration was "employing inconsistent policies" on secrecy.

If the redactions were truly necessary for national security purposes, she continued, "then the CIA's failure to deem the information in the previously published version of the article as classified may have put our security at risk."

On the other hand, "If classifying information in the previously published version of the article was not necessary, then I am left to believe that your Administration redacted information for political purposes."

Officials from the White House and CIA told UPI that the redactions were part of a routine classification review.
