Sharon sent to intensive care

TEL AVIV, Israel, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Israel's former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was Friday transferred to an intensive care unit after his condition deteriorated.

The Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, near Tel Aviv, said Sharon was moved to the ICU due to "a weakening of his condition."

Sharon, 78, lost consciousness on Jan. 4 when he was still in office and never regained it. In the last few months he has been hospitalized at Sheba's Department of Respiratory Rehabilitation.

The hospital said Friday that he contracted an infection that is affecting his heart and will receive intensive treatment to combat that infection.

"At this point, his condition is stable," the hospital added.
