
WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- U.S. Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte has appointed a Foreign Service veteran to be National Intelligence Officer for Africa.
A statement from Negroponte's office Wednesday named John Carson to the post on the National Intelligence Council
Carson is currently senior vice president of the National Defense University in Washington. His Foreign Service career includes ambassadorships to Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Uganda. Earlier, he served in more junior capacities in Botswana, Mozambique, and Nigeria, and also served as the principal deputy assistant secretary for the Bureau of African Affairs at the State Department.
Carson is also a former staff director for the House International Relations Africa Subcommittee. He holds a bachelor's degree from Drake University and a master's degree from the University of London.
The statement said that national intelligence officers are the community's top experts in their fields and are the director of national intelligence's most senior substantive advisers.
