MELBOURNE, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- An Australian magistrate on Friday sent 11 members of an alleged terror cell to trial following a six-week commitment hearing.

The men, arrested last November in a massive anti-terror sweep, are accused of being members of a terrorist organization led by a self-styled cleric named Nacer Benbrika. Several are also charged with helping fund a terrorist organization and/or possessing items for use in a terrorist attack.

According to The Australian, authorities monitoring the group had compiled more than 16,000 hours of tapped conversations among the members, who were allegedly planning a large-scale attack in Australia in revenge for Australia's participation in military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

All 11 defendants denied charges against them.

The newspaper said seven of the accused refused to stand in court when Magistrate Paul Smith announced his decision.

Smith next week will decide whether two other defendants will be sent to trial.
