BANGKOK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Bombs exploded at 22 banks in southern Thailand Thursday in what authorities believed was a terrorist attempt to damage the local economy.
One person -- a retired military officer -- was killed at the Kasikornbank branch in the Muang district of Yala province, The Bangkok Post reported Friday.
In all, 24 people were injured in near simultaneous explosions at the branches of 10 banks in Yala, Thailand's southernmost province and a battleground of Muslim separatists.
Five suspects have been detained, authorities said.
According to the report, the bombers apparently dressed like vocational school students and concealed explosives in books and plastic bags, which were then placed on bank counters and shelves in the banks' customer areas.
Reports said leaflets had been spread throughout Yala earlier in the week threatening violence in retaliation for government action against separatists in Yala and neighboring Pattani and Narathiwat.
The provinces, close to Malaysia, are predominantly Muslim.
The bombings are thought to have been the handiwork of a group called Bersatu.
