Israel operation in Lebanon denounced

BEIRUT, Lebanon, July 13 (UPI) -- The ongoing Israeli "Operation Just" against Lebanon drew strong condemnation by Arab and foreign countries which called for an immediate end to violence.

Jordan's parliament denounced Thursday the "Israeli military escalation" against Lebanon and urged quick Arab and international action to curb the dangerous deterioration in both Lebanon and the Palestinian territories.

The head of parliament Committee for Arab and International Affairs Mohammed Abu Hadib said "we stand on the side of our brethren in Lebanon and Palestine against the Israeli attacks that killed civilians and disapprove the silence of the international community regarding the developments that threaten the region's stability and international peace."

Russia's foreign ministry condemned Israel's raid on Beirut international airport as a "dangerous move" towards military escalation and called on Hezbollah to release the two Israeli soldiers it kidnapped Wednesday, unleashing Israel's military wrath.

A ministry spokesman was quoted by the Russian news agency, RIA Novosti, as saying "Russia stands firmly with Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity, but condemns the kidnapping of the Israeli soldiers and calls for their immediate and non-conditional release."

In Beirut, Arab ambassadors summoned by Prime Minister Fouad Siniora expressed solidarity with Lebanon against the Israeli military escalation.

Kuwaiti Ambassador Ali Suleiman said "we will brief our governments on the dangerous developments in Lebanon which concern the whole Arab nation and intensify international contacts to deal with the dangerous aggression."
