Pakistani opposition leader visits India

NEW DELHI, May 16 (UPI) -- Pakistani opposition leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman arrived in India for talks aimed at improving India-Pakistan relations.

The Indian Express newspaper said Tuesday that Rehman's week-long visit would also take him to the Dar-ul-Uloom, a renowned Muslim religious institution in northern Deoband, where he will meet with religious leaders.

Though his schedule is not finalized, Rehman, head of the six-party alliance of Islamic groups of Pakistan, has sought appointments with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, opposition leader Lal Kishen Advani and former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.

"There has been some fruitful people-to-people interaction at the level of artists between the two countries for sometime now. We want to take this process forward by including the community leaders and politicians. Maulana Rehman's visit is part of this," said Mahmood Madani, an Indian lawmaker.

Rehman is famous for his pro-Taliban stance and his anti-U.S., anti-Musharraf rallies in major Pakistani cities during the 2001 war against the Taliban.

Advani and Vajpayee held discussions with Rehman during their last visit to Pakistan.
