Aussies less concerned over terror

CANBERRA, Australia, April 27 (UPI) -- Australian concern over terrorism has dropped sharply in recent months, according to a national survey.

Roy Morgan Research, in a study commissioned in advance of the Future Summit to be held in Brisbane, indicated that only 12 percent of respondents this month believed terrorism was the most important issue facing the country. The figure was 21 percent last October.

The view that terrorism outside Australia was a major world dropped to 32 percent in April from 52 percent in October, according to the survey reported Friday in The Australian.

The drop in concern for terrorism apparently stems at least partly from the absence of major terror attacks outside the Middle East.

Australia is a strong supporter of the U.S.-led war against terror and has troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Following last July's terror attacks in Britain, the Australian government has instituted a number of new anti-terror measures and cracked down on Muslim clerics preaching violence.

The Future Summit brings together academics and leaders from government and business to discuss strategic trends that will affect Australia.
