Samsung invests $752m in plasma displays

SEOUL, April 3 (UPI) -- Samsung SDI, the world's largest maker of plasma display panels, said Monday it will spend $752 million to build a new production line.

The South Korean flat screen display manufacturer described the 730 billion won investment plan as part of efforts to meet the increasing demand for large flat panels in the United States.

The company's fourth PDP production line, which opens in March next year, will produce three million 42-inch screens a year. It will boost the company's total capacity to 7.32 million units a year it said.

"As its fourth PDP line is to begin mass production from May 2007, Samsung SDI will actively cope with rapidly growing demand for PDPs," the company said in a statement.

"The investment will help Samsung SDI secure its top global position by differentiating itself from competitors through stronger profits and quality," Kim Soon-taek, Samsung SDI's chief executive officer, said in the statement.

PDPs are flat screens used for thin televisions and other display monitors and are one of the fastest growing segments in the hi-tech market.
