Four women enter Pakistani Air Force

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, March 30 (UPI) -- Four women have been inducted as fighter pilots in the Pakistani Air Force for the first time in history.

The women, part of the latest batch of 36 cadets, were awarded flying badges after three years of training at the PAF academy in Risalpur, the BBC reported Thursday.

The women are the first female pilots in the 58-year-history of the Pakistan air force. They were trained in MFI-17 Super Mushfhak and T-37 jets.

The air force agreed three years ago to allow women to train as fighter pilots. Women were previously allowed to join the armed forces, but only in non-combat jobs like the medical corps.

Three more women are expected to get their flying badges in October, but the air force is waiting to see how they will perform before deciding whether to induct more female trainees.

While the women live and train in separate quarters from their male collageues, they undergo the same training.
